![]() ![]() Tales of Xadia is fine and so is Marvel Heroic from a while back but if you want to use the engine as a generic system, you're going to have a lot of work cut out for you as Cortex Prime is less a core book and more of a toolbox on how to write your own rpg. ![]() I've tried modern Cortext many times over the past few years and I've ultimately given up. That's not to mention several websites that offer the ability roll genesys dice. If you don't want to go that route, an excellent free app for iOS/Android is available as well as some good Genesys-specific die-rolling Discord bots. The dice are finally back in production and you can get them off of Amazon they're not expensive. There's a fair cognitive load, though, with each roll so I wouldn't recommend it for action-heavy games like heroic fantasy or super spies. ![]() The variability of results is superb for certain genres like, say, urban fantasy, exploration sci-fi and the back and forth of pulp play. Genesys is great for investigation-heavy games. I need to bust out my copy of Cortex and think about doing something serious with it, now that more of the settings are available. Mentioned above the funny dice are expensive and can be a nuisance to source. (And I believe the various VTTs have scripts created for this too, if that's your preference.) Otherwise, as C Cross Planes So that's something to consider, if it works for you. It surprised me to find that everyone in our group was quite happy doing that, but it makes the process really quick. With respect to the funny dice, we just use a dice roller on our phones during the game. ![]() After years of D&D 3.5 I just don't have the interest to build NPCs like PCs anymore, so my fall-back plan is to reskin various NPCs from the Star Wars game as needed (we have a giant pile of material after two Star Wars campaigns). I'm not 100% sure yet how quick / easy it will be to create adversaries - my impression is that you are meant to lean on the pre-generated adversaries pretty heavily, and modify them as needed. I have played the Star Wars version of Genesys quite a bit, and am thinking of using it for the Cyberpunk game that I want to run. I'm kind of old, so when I see generic I keep expecting to see GURPS and Hero etc - it is very cool that there are so many other options, many of which I hadn't really considered (e.g. Interesting set of systems that you have picked. I ran Fate this year and it was delightful - I used Condensed and didn't run into any of the issues I thought I would. There seem to be lots of different things i could combine from the different books. Only ran some dragon age a long time ago. AGE - i have a bunch of the new stuff and it seems very cool.I also have the new BRP book (which is just a cleanup of the original gold book) which seems nice. Certainly good for long term play (slow % advancement), however seems like a ton of work to do antagonists and having to keep track of every antagonist's hit point/armor by location, particularly when improving a combat scene that came up as a result of sandbox style play, seems heavy. Mythras - I got a lot of the new stuff (the vampire and supehero settings).Honor & Intrigue / Everywhen / Various BOL - I have both of these and they seem fun, though there's not a lot of "parts" to a character so I'm not sure how much fun this would be for players for a longer form game. There's a very limited range of capabilities (d12) and it doesn't even have the Fate pyramid for advancement. Unlike Fate, I can't just steal stuff from various places because every single Cortex build is different. CORTEX - I have all the kickstarter stuff, but it seems like a ton of heavy lifting. Not sure if every antagonist needs to be statted out like a PC. I've only played the Star Wars version and liked it. GENESYS - I was surprised to find how much activity there is for this game.My concern is how hard it might be to get it to work for a long-form, not-railroad campaign where the characters don't have godlike capabilities half-way through (effort and skills making "Impossible" rolls easy) CYPHER - I have a whole bunch of the Cypher settings and supplements.I've picked up a couple of generic systems (I'm a sucker for them) and would love to hear your experience about them or thoughts before I try to use them to run a long form campaign and things go horribly wrong. ![]()
